ABSTRACT
The Common Ground, a series of community engagement and justice centers that stand to provide a safe place for children and community volunteers such as police officers to come and engage with one another. The hope in providing such a place is that we would establish a common ground, and grow in a shared knowledge and understanding of each other. Thus getting children off the streets and leading them away from a life of crime.
UNDERSTANDING
The National Memorial for Peace and Justice
Marie Curie once said, “Nothing in life is to be feared, it is only to be understood. Now is the time to understand more, so that we may fear less”. Understanding is imperative not only for the unity of a people, but for the healing and growth of a nation. It is because of this that I have set forth in educating myself on the vast history that Montgomery lays witness to. Through visiting The National Memorial for Peace and Justice as well as the Legacy Museum, there is one thing that rings true: we must bring to light the darkness. It is my hope that in educating myself, I can educate others. It is my hope that we would rise above. That we would find common ground in our shared humanity. That we would join hands and walk humbly in unity. That we would love our neighbors as our own, in order that we may learn from the past, bring to light the darkness, and move forth in reconciliation.
OVERVIEW
In researching the future of Montgomery and how the built environment is directly affected by social and economic factors. I have asked two questions. First, how will community engagment impact generations to come? Second, what socioeconomic impact will crime have on the city?
VISION
It is through researching these two topics that I have set out to establish a series of community engagement and justice centers. These centers stand to provide a safe place for children and community volunteers like police officers to come and engage with one another. Through doing this, it is my hope to establish a common ground and grow in a shared knowledge and understanding of one another. The anticipated result being, to get children off the streets and lead them away from a life of crime.
TARGET AREA
Located within a ten minute radius of the Riverfront, and just minutes away from low income schools and neighborhoods. The Common Ground stands as a center for community justice. In providing such a place, I hope to create a common ground for children and volunteers of all demographics.
May this be the place where we join hands and walk humbly in unity with one another. May this be the place where we learn from the past, bring to light the darkness, and move forth in reconciliation.
